Recent essay on Tencent + AI Strategy that's viral in China.

Was interesting essay and analysis. But ultimately I wasn't particularly compelled by it. Not convinced lens of analyzing company from a purely data / AI perspective seems very useful to me.

US analyses is much more distribution focused, with AI as means to unlock distribution
Would be surprised to believe that apps like Douyin win because of algorithms. I actually don't think much differentiation on algorithms between them and their competitors. Other factors seem much more key. Algorithms relatively commoditized relative to liquidity and distribution
However, most interesting frame to me of this essay is it's frame around AI and data.

I AM very curious if representative of Chinese views. Would mean Chinese are WAY more data/AI centric than I'd realized. US pays lip service, but rarely uses as primary frame of reference

If you take a step back from 1MDB crisis alone, and look at the movements we see by sovereign wealth funds over the last decade (Saudia Arabia with Softbank, Temasek's offices across world, etc)
We are seeing huge shifts in strategy by sovereign wealth funds. That in many ways are reminiscent of the evolution of endowments and foundations after the Swensen model. Would like to see more discussion should be had on this macro trend

With non-arbitraged tactical insights being the things teams do that have edge and others/competition don't know.

KPI / [user level time-based metric or other scope-based metric] cohort charts have been very good in private markets and expect to hit public markets too.

AS crucial, if attention truly is scarce metric than competitive scope becomes global in nature, versus sector based.
We don't see this in business model stuff as much yet. But already see in distribution channel stuff
But I also think people misread the attention scarcity stuff a bit too. Always has been increasing competition on attention. And it is one of a few core scarcities. Most of current wave of feeling its scarce is more about end of early innings of last decade of distribution waves
