A small piece of good (or less bad) news.

I made a mistake! The new Trump rule denying visas & green cards to immigrants who use govt. benefits is NOT retroactive.

Here was my tweet, which I deleted, along with the relevant quote from the (mistaken) NBC article I based it on!

Here is a quote saying it won't be retroactive, from p. 139:
Now, there is an exception to this. If immigrants have ever received the type of benefits that currently define "public charge" - stuff like TANF - then there *is* a retroactive penalty.

From page 225 of the Trump proposal:
In other words, if prospective immigrants stop using govt. benefits right now - or at least, before the rule takes effect - they are still safe from this rule (or as safe as they were under the old system).
