The Trump gang is trying to bury this big national climate report by releasing it mid-afternoon on black Friday.

If you'd prefer to not let them get away with that crap, please retweet.

I'll thread good coverage below.

nca2018.globalchange.gov
Here's the Guardian's coverage: "Heating the planet well beyond [2ºC] would create a 'totally different world... It would be indescribable, it would turn the world upside down in terms of its climate.'"

While not directly about the report, this piece is essential context

"In the past 30 years we’ve seen all 20 of the hottest years ever recorded... 'I’ve never been at a climate conference where people say "that happened slower than I thought it would."'"

Some key takeaways are listed in this thread by @johnupton

Continuing to burn fossil fuels will cost us a ton of money in climate losses.

"[I]f significant steps are not taken to rein in global warming, the damage will knock as much as 10 percent off the size of the American economy by century’s end."

Here's my own thread on the 2017 report, which set the stage for this one...

Embracing climate science and championing bold action is patriotism.

Denial and delay are unpatriotic.

"The prospect and consequences of large-scale migration..."

“The potential need for millions of people and billions of dollars of coastal infrastructure to be relocated in the future creates challenging legal, financial, and equity issues...”

bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
I talk about the huge losses we know climate change and related issues will cause in broad swathes of America as a "brittleness bubble."

Unless bold action is taken now, "annual losses in some economic sectors are projected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars by the end of the century—more than the current gross domestic product of many U.S. states.”

sciencemag.org/news/2018/11/c…
The speed of action is absolutely critical, as I wrote here.

"The curve we’ve been forced onto bends so steeply, that the pace of victory is part of victory itself. Winning slowly is basically the same thing as losing outright."

The report also reiterates the scientific understanding that we cannot "reverse" climate change.

"The impacts of climate change, from deadly wildfires to increasingly debilitating hurricanes and heat waves, are already battering the United States, and the danger of more such catastrophes is worsening."

"The report departs from predecessors in that it focuses on money, and how much of it America stands to lose to climate change... 'Now it’s seen much more as a societal or economic issue than a narrow environmental one.'"

"Farmers will face extremely tough times. The quality and quantity of their crops will decline across the country due to higher temperatures, drought and flooding."

Perhaps the best short summary!

"We're putting a cost on inaction."

Great bullet-point overview of the report's findings...

e.g. "High emissions scenario to cost $160 billion in lost wages; 2 billion labor hours lost annually by 2090 due to temperature extremes..."
