A sound observation by @JamesFallows. Personally, I doubt the value of dwelling on media coverage; what the @nytimes thinks worthy of its front page is not as important as many Times readers seem to think. However, the 2018 midterms were at least as historic...
...in terms of US electoral politics as the 2016 Presidential election, in several respects. First, in how many people voted. Second, in who they were — first-time, mostly younger voters particularly, who will probably vote again in 2020 & may continue the habit thereafter.
Third, in disrupting Republican dominance of statehouses that has allowed the GOP to game elections by restricting access to the ballot. And finally in the sea changes in individual states — especially California, where Republican losses decimated the party.
The 2018 midterm campaigns changed the American electorate, despite a peaking economy that muted discontent with the party in the White House. How big the change was and how long it will last is certainly in doubt. But in the context of political journalism...
...this is a huge story, at least as significant as the “aging Trump supporters in diners” narrative repeated so often over the last two years. [end]
