Thread about my mom and dad. My mother went to work for the first time ever in her life as a music teacher for kindergarten kids about 10 years back, at the age of 50. A BA lit student she got married right out of grad school. Never worked professionally
We grew up in a joint family and she never considered going to work for the longest time. When she finally decided to go for it she was very apprehensive about how it would be. She was also very anxious that she had no big degree or qualifications.
My dad stepped up brilliantly. Encouraged her, and pushed her. We managed to create a half page resume jamming it with skills and hobbies. She went around, got placed and started working.
She rapidly rose through the ranks. In five years time she was managing multiple schools, training teachers in other districts, trained herself in special education teaching. She is now head of academics at the company she works.
On the phone, counselling, advising, correcting, teaching. She travels a lot. Has taught herself to use computer effectively. Has become a pro at putting out fires remotely.
Dad meanwhile, the man who was almost never at home has now learnt cooking, handling the maid, following up with my younger brother’s education and other homely chores :)
She’s back in the job market from next month. She had outgrown her previous position. She sent out her resume today. I prepared it last night. Heard her talking to my dad about it. She exclaimed...
That it was two whole pages filled with experience and skills acquired. And very little padding. She hadn’t realised how much she had done and grown in these past ten years. Her glee was almost childlike and very addictive.
I love that she is now earning and how much it excites her. Her drive and ambition at 60 is incredible and insipiring. My dad on the other hand makes excellent rasam, and is a pro at managing the house.
Goes to show how much people can grow and learn regardless of age, gender or previous experiences. That’s all. #AppreciateYourParents #TheKidsAreAlright
