Three important, personal and academic milestones for me today. It is 2 years today since I joined @lawstrath as a Professor of Law. Fantastic colleagues and students. A pleasure to be in #Glasgow and #Scotland: a vibrant, welcoming and European place.
The EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement comes into force today. My first conference presentation (also in Glasgow) and publications was on this. Contemporary relevance? This deal has been 20 years in the making (take note, Brexit Britain). japanesestudies.org.uk/articles/2005/…
Two years exactly since I left @lawsheffield, my research on the academic impact of #Erasmus and study abroad based on 1300+ graduating students from Sheffield over 5 years is out. Clear evidence that students who go abroad achieve better degree results. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

One of the main problems was that successive governments, Conservative and Labour, has underplayed the importance of the EU, tried to sideline it in debate or hide it under the carpet. Cameron set every interaction up as a 'battle', stoking the UK v EU myth. /2
In the referendum, for Cameron to then turn around and say that the UK needs to remain rang very hollow, as well as putting off anyone who did not want to be seen as allied to a Conservative government or wanting to give him an electoral kicking. /3

After conversations with people outside the twitter/Univeristy/Brexit-commenting bubble, many people are sick of hearing about Brexit and switching off the news when it comes on. /1
This suggests to me that any predications about what a deal/no deal/PV are likely to fall on deaf ears. And exaggeration is taken to be the norm. /2
Worryingly, I think there is a general ignorance about 'settled status' and what this means. I get the sense people who do not have a personal connection to an EU27 citizen think that people who are already here will have no problems and are allowed to stay as before. /3

A second referendum or #PeoplesVote may be the only way out of a Parliamentary #Brexit impasse. But I do not expect it to heal divisions or, worse, provide any clarity on the way forward. /1
The main issue for me comes back to the question to be asked. All the potential options (remain v no deal; remain v May deal; May deal v no deal; choice of three) seem inadequate. /2
A choice between three options or 1st/2nd preferences (as advocated by @JustineGreening) is attractive but has the basic problem that unless one option gets 50%+ then the ‘winning’ choice will be a minority one. Dissatisfaction all round. /3

People trying to make this matter about Onnoghen miss the point:

This isn’t about Onnoghen or what he did or didn’t do, it is about the breach of the constitution, the breach of separation of powers, the breach of the rule of law and the illegal actions of Muhammadu Buhari.
By his actions, Buhari has breached his oath of office and is now on trial in the court of Democrats all over the world.

The focus isn’t Onnoghen, the focus is on Buhari’s illegal action - which is indefensible and this is why Osinbajo failed to show up today on a TV programme.
When a Professor of Law runs away from a TV programme hosted by a graduate of Law, it is because he knows that there is no constitutional justification for what his boss did.

This isn’t about Onnoghen, it is about a constitution trampled upon and a democracy in danger.

PWDV Act, 2005, gives a broad definition of what qualifies as ‘domestic abuse’. It includes physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and economic abuse. Section 3 reads:
The Act provides for a ‘Protection Officer’ to help you through various processes under the law. This Officer can help you file the complaint, tell you about your rights, make an application to the Magistrate for you, etc.

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether

Yesterday late afternoon #Russia/n forces took 3 positions in Qusseyr and Juseh and established checkpoints. #Hezbollah, not informed of the Russian presence, came close to these forces and asked their immediate pull out+
Following the direct intervention of President Bashar al-Assad, the Russian force pulled out this morning and avoided any clash with #Hezbollah in the area.

hezbollah maantin and kept all positions. The #Russia/n move was not coordinated.+

#Hezbollah did not...I repeat, did not pull out one single element from the area.

I spoke to people on the ground: The Russian decision was unclear and considered unwelcome by the forces on the ground. Still, many elements of this move are unclear.
