Whoa: Starting Feb 28, Facebook will reveal in ads who has targeted you by name by uploading your data into Facebook. Still looks like there’s no single, persistent opt-out to hide all ads targeted to you with uploaded Custom Audiences data though. techcrunch.com/2019/02/06/why…
This could allow vigilant Facebook users to hold third-parties accountable who are illegitimately exploiting their data. Especially thinking about EU citizens who could go after naughty advertisers violating their data rights under GDPR.
Would be better if Custom Audiences ads targeted with personal info had an icon or other visible distinction on the ad to cue users to expand for more info and check the data source for legitimacy. This probably requires folks to expand all ads to look for bad guys.
You can find the advertisers who have uploaded your personal info into FB deep in the ad settings. I’m guessing you’ll find unexpected entities in there. And good luck opting out of it. Hope your clicker finger is well rested.
A seasoned (Dem-servicing) political consultant told me that it would be professional malpractice *not* to upload targeted voter files into Facebook Custom Audiences for direct voter targeting. Now voters will see their voter file in action by campaigns and PACs if they look.
These steps toward some transparency may help voters realize that thanks to microtargeting and hyperpartisan, hyperpersonalized news feeds and ads, candidates chose voters rather than vice versa. theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
