“Revenge porn” usually aims to punish women. In #Egypt, a sex tape was leaked to punish a director/parliamentarian who opposes amending the constitution to extend the president’s rule. But “morality” laws mean it’s the women on the tape being charged with “inciting debauchery.”
Another #Egyptian woman Amal Fathy was sentenced to 2yrs in prison for posting a video complaining about being sexually harassed. It is believed she’s being punished for criticizing the state for not doing enough and also to punish her activist husband. bbc.com/news/world-mid…
And remember the ridiculous moral panic and consequent case against actress Rania Youssef over a dress. She appeared on TV tearfully pleading to be “forgiven” as male anchors chastised her as if she we were a child bbc.com/news/av/world-…
In #Egypt, and much of the Middle East, “inciting debauchery” is like violating national security: a catchall used against a variety of moral opponents & mobilized to unite people — regardless of politics — in righteous indignation vs women & LGBTQ community
