/Hey @AriFleischer, I’m a ‘serious historian,’ and your claim that the Bush Administration didn’t lie, and that this was an intelligence failure rather than a political decision to go to war in the face of abundant evidence that Hussein did not have WMDs is utterly preposterous.
/the National Security Archive has been declassifying documents on decisionmaking for war for years, and they make it abundantly clear that the Bush Admin was determined to go to war and manipulated both intel and public opinion to this end: nsarchive2.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB4…
/The British government, *our closest ally,* saw this, concluding in the summer of 2002, nearly 8 months before the invasion that "intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy:” nsarchive2.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB4…
/moreover, the Bush Admin made a very deliberate decision to disparage and undermine the work of the UN inspections mission, UNSCOM, whose members saw that Saddam Hussein was lying but were skeptical that had was doing so Bc Iraq had WMDs, which they were finding scant ev for.
/ As early as November 2001, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld briefed Central Command chief Gen. Tommy Franks to discuss a new plan for war with Iraq and possible m “triggers,” including deliberately creating conflict with the UN over WMD inspections:
/ I could go on, but ‘serious historians” have pieced together much of this story, and will continue to do so. The Bush Admin lied to justify a war it was determined to wage independent of what intel said, independent of allies and the UN. You lied for them, and share the blame.
