You need to understand the extreme extent that Facebook and others go to get your data.

Even if you never sign up for Facebook they have your information in a "shadow profile"

Lets say your mom, friend, and girlfriend are signed up.
Facebook asks them for their contact list

Facebook sees
"John Doe - 555-1234"
"Son - 555-1234"
"Boyfriend - 555-1234"

Congrats you now have a profile and they know who youre dating and who your mom is
From their they can easily get your locations, your school, what you eat, etc.
If you mom posts "at the Burger shop with son"
They know where you are and what you eat
I never consented to YOU giving MY data to facebook so why is facebook allowed to collect information on ME from other people?

I'm pro choice because I do not think government should have the power to mandate a person provide their body and blood to another person.

Of course Twitter is a trash medium for nuance and discussion but thats about the best I can get to simplifying my position.
The abortion issue is one of the most difficult ethical questions we face and I dont have any good answers.
I just know that we need to stop talking past each other and try our best to understand the perspective of others

Twitter is radicalizing people faster than any other network

The short but easily shared format allows fake news to travel faster than ever before

Out of context clips, quotes, and headlines result in the rapid deployment of information fragments which mislead and radicalize
Activists also use screenshots of clips, quotes, and headlines to actually make it harder to research. People fall for misleading narratives and the record is often never corrected
Facebook is fast but at least you have more space to post your idea, Youtube doesn't have a direct share function so its actually very slow

They used personal information taken without authorization in early 2014 to build a system that could profile individual US voters, in order to target them with personalised political advertisements.

Anyone that uses Facebook has probably given permission to an app at some stage. Maybe you use FB to sign into other sites, or you wanted to see some future predictions for fun. That's grand, but they retain access to your data even after you stop using them. Here's how to review
First go to your drop down menu & click Settings. Then click Apps. Review these carefully. For e.g. I use Kickstarter and 9gag frequently so those are grand, but see the ones like Klout and Giveaway widget? I'll want to remove permissions for those, even if only I can see posts.

Having finished The Authoritarians, it's time to start a new thread of #IanLivetweetsHisResearch. Today I am finally getting past the introduction of How Propaganda Works by Jason Stanley.
Having slogged through some proper academic writing in my day, Stanley's writing is blessedly accessible. But after Altemeyer's light tone and constant dad jokes, Stanley's reads as pretty dry.
So far the introduction is full of a lot of quotations about the nature of democracy, from Victor Klemperer to Elizabeth Anderson to Plato. OF COURSE Plato.
