The Biden-Sanders spat over health care is depressing, and reflects badly on both men 1/ nytimes.com/2019/07/18/us/…
Biden has come out with a health proposal that he's billing as an extension of Obamacare, which it sort of is – but it's a much more dramatic expansion than his own rhetoric makes it sound like 2/
And it's actually pretty good. It would go a long way toward achieving truly universal coverage, and its public option would definitely reduce the power of the insurance industry. Charles Gaba has more 3/ acasignups.net/19/07/17/joe-b…
So Sanders is attacking the proposal as a giveaway to bad guys, and doubling down on his claim that nothing but Medicare for All will do. But while there's a case for M4A, many countries achieve universal coverage while preserving private insurance 4/
Sanders, then, is trying to enforce a purity test that is really not helpful. But Biden is behaving badly, too – arguably worse – with scurrilous attacks on M4A that echo GOP scare tactics. That is very definitely not OK 5/
Both men come across as self-centered and self-indulgent. Eyes on the prize, guys. Single-payer types should be able to admit that there are other routes; non-single-payer types should admit that single-payer works where it has been applied. And trash-talk is just bad 6/
