On #Brexit am told that PM and Donald Tusk repeated their known positions. PM said this withdrawal agreement cannot get through Parliament. Tusk repeated EU line that they are open to alternatives on the backstop but they have to be realistic and immediately operational /3

Behind the scenes EU figures v frustrated. They feel the withdrawal agreement was result of ‘hard work, compromise and creative thinking’ from both EU and UK teams. Sense in EU that now we are no further than we were 2/3 years ago BUT /4

As one Brussels diplomat put it to me “Of course EU prefers a deal. We will never close the door on UK. As long as they keep talking, so will we but the ball is firmly in UK court now to come up with alternatives.” /4
