Very cool thread if you want to learn history, but too many are taking it as a window into the future. I’m aware that the most recent LLNL global Sankey is for 2011, but in that case let’s be intellectually honest: we're talking about past 60 years. 1/5

To think that a single tech will change the global energy system is silly (hi ecomodernists). Neither coal, gas or oil are a single technology, but include wide array of different techs sharing a common fuel to provide hundreds of different types of products and services. 3/5
It’s the end use tech that drives the consumption profile of the Sankey. As we connect abundant and cheap RE with batteries and electrolysers, entire sectors such as steel making, transport and heat open to transformation. 4/5

So yes, we haven’t seen much change in the last 60 years. But change is coming, and it's coming fast. Still, I echo Glen's final words: to keep within 2C we have to do even better than that. 5/5
