I've worked in the Capitol as a reporter since 1986. What happened today made me smile because it's such an Inside the Capitol kind of story. 1/
It had been a busy news morning - even though Congress is on break - and I had just gone down to the Capitol carry out on the House side to get some food. 2/
I get my lunch and head back to the Radio TV Gallery, when a U.S. Capitol Police officer stops me in the hallway. 3/
At first, all I can think is that it's the same officer who recently physically blocked me from going to the gallery, demanding to see my press ID at 10 am 4/
But I see right away it's a different guy. "I know you've been around here a long time," the officer says - leaving me somewhat confused - as I have no idea where this is going. 5/
"What do you think - is there going to be an impeachment trial in the Senate?" the officer asks. 6/
First, I'm relieved that I'm not being hauled away 7/
As many of you know, talking is not my strong suit these days, so I squeaked out a few words and told him I thought it was a 50/50 proposition 8/
When I got home and told my wife the story (she's an ex-Hill staffer), she instantly had the same reaction as I did 9/
We figured it was a guy trying to figure out how much extra he might have to work in coming months, and how it might impact his vacation schedule 10/
For you youngsters who didn't cover the Clinton impeachment, all I can say is I put my life on hold for months covering that story. And so did a lot of other people on Capitol Hill /
