As we watch this Trumpian Tsunami of corruption sweep away our institutions, values, system of laws and international standing, it is important to see how widespread support for the criminality and abuse is within the GOP. Attention "Never Trumpers!"
The problem is clearly not Trump alone or even his family. It is Trumpism. You say you want Trump gone. But that won't cure a thing. The immorality and the threats to our national security stem from much deeper roots.
These include the inequality and alienation of a base that feels DC long-ago stopped working for them, the impunity with which those backed by big money feel in the money driven world of post-Citizens United DC, the demagoguery of GOP leaders playing on economic & social anxiety.
The cure therefore is not to replace Trump with a candidate who will tolerate those afflictions from which our democracy is currently dying or who will offer only modest adjustments. It is to address the root causes of Trumpism.
It is essential to the entire country and to the world that we defeat not only Trump but Trumpism. If you are deluding yourself into thinking that getting rid of Trump we can go back to "the way we were" you are forgetting the key fact: the way we were brought us to Trump.
That is why for all our sakes, we must hope the Democrats have the wisdom to run a candidate that will work toward a real end to the social, economic, and political failures and perversions that have brought us to where we are. This means real change. But anything less...
...means more decline, decay and despair. Open your minds to this but do not be deceived, should the Dems run that candidate she or he will win not because you came aboard, but because she or he mobilized a movement and tapped into the real desire of most Americans for change.
You have the power, Never Trumpers, to help bring about that change. But make no mistake, you do not have the power to stop it. Nor should you want that power. It is in everyone's interests that this dark and dangerous period be brought to a final and lasting end.
