The West can, with an effort, attempt to force Turkey to recognize a Kurdish state in East Syria. But this requires a serious commitment up to and including possible conflict with Turkey. It's not going to be free.
The argument for such a commitment is that Turkey has turned anti Democratic and it's time to cut the NATO ties. It's a strategic decision about what's in American interest.
Alternatively you can negotiate some internationally guaranteed enclave that will make Turkey unhappy but not to the point they will war for it. How to do this?

The state of the Dem presidential lineup suggests they have not yet recovered from Hillary's defeat. She proved the old model bankrupt and the vacuum hasn't been filled yet. The outrage of the last 3 years is smoke covering an ongoing redeployment.
Trump's incumbency, as Romneys statements occasionally remind us, masks the fact that the Republicans are similarly directionless. When the Donald goes as he eventually must, the question becomes : what does everyone do for an encore?
A lot of our anxiety stems from the fact that we've lost one consensus model of politics without finding another. We wait with bated breath for history to give us a new script but maybe none will come and we must make up the words as we go along.

The biggest problem with the liberal outrage against Trump is that his deals are Washington normal, and public disgust is why despite their policy craziness Warren and Sanders are competitive.

This is why moral arguments have hardly made a dent on the Donald. The arbiters of virtue are whitened sepulchers and for so long as he keeps the economy up and America out of war the public will prefer a competent rogue to incompetent ones.
Of course it is a terrible indictment of Washington that it has come to this.

The SDF has suffered thousands of casualties. Until this past week, 2 Americans had died in combat in Syria. 4 were killed Wednesday in a suicide bombing claimed by the Islamic State—the first of its kind against our forces in Syria coinciding with uncertainty about the mission.)
My counterparts in coalition capitals were bewildered. Our fighting partners in the SDF, whom I had visited regularly on the ground in Syria, expressed shock and then denial, hoping Trump would change his mind.
