This book ties into my thoughts about middle class debt. If America wasn't built on racism, we'd have equal funding for schools & infrastructure such that everyone could live in a neighborhood with good schools, access to fresh food & good transportation.
Loose gun laws, refusal to expand healthcare & tax cuts that take money from schools is all tied to racism. It reminds me of #1619Project. More white Missourians are dying from guns. Tennessee has awful healthcare & Kansas schools (1954) are defunded causing whites to drop out.
Gun ownership was historically for white people, black people were insured as property (discussed in the book I read last week, Medical Apartheid) & Kansas is well known for Brown v. Board of Education where a black child couldn't attend her local white school in walking distance
Background on Brown v. Board of Topeka Kansas from Linda Brown
I'm intrigued that despite the white population decreasing since 2000 gun suicides by white men have increased. 92% of gun suicides are white people. I wonder if there is a correlation between access to gun permits where required. We've spent $6k+ so far in NYC for a carry permit
Interesting that Missouri gun laws started to change from 1921 permitted gun ownership to slowly remove restrictions on gun ownership starting in 2007 just before we got a black president.
Wow, being a white man in Missouri is a risk factor by itself for gun death.
As I've said before, we won't get universal healthcare coverage for all because there are white people who would rather die than see black people benefit. They use cost as a rationale just like "economic anxiety" was used as a proxy for racism.
The disconnect of people who don't want the government involved in their healthcare while using government healthcare is astounding i.e., Brian benefits from Medicaid & the VA.
Intriguing information from focus groups shows black men as supportive of Obamacare to help everyone while white men approach healthcare reform as us v. them & not wanting non-white people to benefit
Staggering. Had Tennessee expanded Medicaid between 2011-2015 from 6,000 -12,000 white lives might have been saved & 1,800 - 4,500 black lives
Rejection of the Medicaid expansion hurt white people in Tennessee more than the black people they wanted to deny benefits to ...so their racism backfired.
Trump asked poor white people to choose less medical insurance coverage & more suffering over Obamacare that would give them healthier & longer lives & be linked to "Mexicans" & "welfare queens." They picked white supremacy.
It's not even a surprise that Kansas residents were fine with deep tax cuts when only schools that black & Hispanic kids attended were impacted. The more things change, the more they stay the same
Kansas budget cuts to schools seemingly targeted schools that black & Hispanic kids attended but their racism backfired when white kids started to drop out too.
There is so much data available that correlates high school drop out rates with health issues & lower life expectancy. One would think this would equal more investment in education but instead public school budgets are generally cut nationwide.
Kansas apparently lost out on the Amazon second headquarters because they don't have enough highly skilled workers in science & math, partly due to years of cuts to education. Racism backfired.
Although these Kansas residents saw what Republicans policies of cutting taxes for the wealthy & defunding infrastructure projects & schools did to their state, they support Trump who is doing the same thing nationally. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."
Very good read. I have similar thoughts about what the USA could be if maintaining white supremacy wasn't the primary goal. People wouldn't save to move to neighborhoods with better schools or better infrastructure because everyone would have equal access in all communities.
I do agree that progressives can go too far w/o addressing the underlying issue. What will free college do for black people when the school to prison pipeline still exists & K-12 public schools are failing due to being defunded? nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Thinking about Mark Hughes this morning, a black good guy with a gun who Dallas Police falsely accused of being a cop killer & put his photo on their Twitter account as a suspect & left it up for DAYS although they knew he did nothing wrong that 1st night. leagle.com/decision/infdc…
