So today is Amazon's Earnings day. I twooted Microsoft's yesterday, so let's begin!
Because companies are ridiculous, today's cloud provider is impacted by shoe sales in much the same way as yesterday's cloud provider is impacted by gaming console sales because the future is stupid.
Amazon is down 9% in after-hours trading the last time I checked because financial analysts suck at forecasting.
One comment on @amazon before I delve into cloud: There are some things I simply won't buy on Amazon anymore because I'm tired of playing Counterfeit Roulette. I'm still astounded that my underpants vendor is also my cloud computing provider.
In @awscloud news, things are grim. Instead of the market's expected $9.1 billion for the quarter, they only made $9 billion in sales. That's year-over-year growth of 35%, so clearly they're in a death spiral.
To put that in perspective, 1% of YoY growth next year will be $90 million. Plz go sell an extra $90 million of whatever your company does and then talk to me about how easy it was.
Of that $9 billion in quarterly sales, $2.26 billion was profit. One of these days I'll break that down by individual AWS service just to strike terror into the hearts of Amazonians. I don't have data, but I do have hunches, and that's what matters to Wall Street.
They gave a laundry list of @awscloud launches over the past quarter. With Bahrain opening they're now in 69 AZs (nice!) across 22 geographic regions. They launched Amazon Forecast and haven't apologized for it yet. AWS IQ is a thing now.
They claim that the EFS price cut is the 75th price cut in @awscloud history. This is horseshit. Those "price cuts" are frequently specific services in specific regions. They're never across the board. Lumping them together like that is disingenuous.
If you want a price cut that people will notice, do another S3 cut, or fix data transfer. Don't lop costs off of one storage class for a non-core service and then break your arms patting yourselves on the back.
Exactly. If I had my druthers you'd see AWS and Azure both as independent companies competing on their own merits. Imagine what AWS could achieve without the drag of the retail business.
