Bela Bhatia confirms to @scroll_in that WhatsApp informed her she was a target of spyware.
When Citizen Lab first called her in late September, she was told:
“It is your own government which is doing this.”
Chhattisgarh activist Degree Prasad Chauhan confirms he was notified by WhatsApp about the spyware.
"I've been working on Dalit human rights causes for more than 15 years, have raised my voice against atrocities on Dalits, land grabbing cases..."
Former BBC journalist Shubhranshu Choudhary also a target of the Israeli spyware.
"During my days as a BBC journalist, there used to be phone surveillance. Now I've been working on the new peace process in Bastar. This might be connected to that," he told @scroll_in
Ashish Gupta, an activist with the People's Union for Democratic Rights, was informed by the Citizens Lab of the surveillance.
"They said, 'Do you know your mobile phone has been hacked?' I replied, 'Yes, it is possible.'"
Another target: Shalini Gera of the Jagdalpur Legal Aid Group.
"...I assumed I was of no interest to the government. Then, it struck me that this could be because of the Bhima Koregaon case, I am involved in the case as Sudha [Bharadwaj]'s lawyer."

Seema Azad of PUCL did not take the WhatsApp message alerting her to the hack seriously until she read @seemay's report in the Indian Express today.
"I read that human rights activists, lawyers and journalists have been targetted. I am all three," she told @scroll_in
Activist Vivek Sundara said he got a message from Citizens Lab about a week ago, saying he was a possible victim of the hack. “I deleted it [the message] because it seemed suspicious,” he said.

Ankit Grewal, Chandigarh-based lawyer, said he would continuously get missed calls on WhatsApp from foreign numbers.
Grewal represented Bhima Koregaon accused lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Anand Teltumbde, who is also an accused in the Bhima Koregaon case, received a call from Citizen Lab.
“They told me this [the spyware] was a sophisticated programme that could take control of your phone: turn on the microphone and the camera, steal your passwords.”
Rupali Jadhav of the Kabir Kala Manch, another group swept into the Bhima Koregaon case, said she cannot afford to replace her hacked phone.
"We are told India is a democracy. But if our right to privacy is violated, doesn't this raise questions over that?" she said.
Ajmal Khan, former doctoral student at TISS, said his activism could have made him a target for surveillance.
"I have been quite active in Bombay in the anti-caste movement and civil liberties movements including Bhima Koregaon,” he said.
Former Lok Sabha MP and veteran journalist, Santosh Bhartiya, said he received an alert from WhatsApp about the phone hacking.
“I don’t know why I was targetted, I’m a small journalist, not a big one. But maybe they are targetting pro-people journalists...”

Alok Shukla of the Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan ignored the hack alert from WhatsApp till he read the story in Indian Express today.
He believe the surveillance is connected to his campaigns against coal mining, including an Adani project.
