I used a standardized array of interview questions across 15 hours of interviews with trans folks regarding their experiences seeking health care in the United States, both POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE, to give providers #narrative examples/guidelines on what not to do, AND what to do.
I did the interviews and my research assistants (@BreanneRBurton, Ren Czachor, Jake Richardson, and Harry Silvey) transcribed them so that no unknown persons would have access to the audio. While some participants gave permission to share audio, all permit sharing transcripts.

Nearly 1 in 5 trans folks surveyed (19 percent) reported being refused health care care outright because they were transgender or gender non-conforming.

REIHELD NOTE: this is consistent across studies, & across US and Canada. Access to care is about bias, not just systems. 3/n

In honor of Labor Day, here’s some free #trans labor for you: a solid three-step method to getting someone’s #pronouns right every time.

1. Hold yourself accountable for corrections. At first, you’re going to make mistakes. That’s not great, though it’s expected. BUT:
To gain competence, correct yourself every time.

This is not the time to do a big extensive apology or get in your feelings or start offering your thoughts about why you’re struggling. Just say “Sorry. SHE said...” Apologize briefly, correct, carry on. Every time.
2. Empower others to hold you accountable. Learning requires being correct *even when the person isn’t there to hear your error*. Ask all the relevant people - family, colleagues, friends, &c - to please remind you when you mess up. Then do step one again “Sorry, SHE said...”

Education. Betsy DeVos has rolled back protections for students filing reports of sexual assault on college campuses. These protections were critical for students who disproportionately experience sexual assault, such as trans and nonbinary students. aclu.org/blog/womens-ri…
Health Care. Just last week, the Trump DOJ asked a court to invalidate health care protections for trans and nonbinary people as part of the ACA. This case is a blatant attempt to keep trans and nonbinary people from accessing basic health care. slate.com/human-interest…
