My 15 high-level takeaway messages for nature and climate from #Davos2020 - thread below 👇 Image
1. A new ‘climate change economics’ is becoming mainstream but the speed of implementation is too slow and too meek. #Davos2020
2. More businesses are understanding that the loss of nature is a risk to them but they are still confused about how to measure their impacts and what to do. #Davos2020
3. Some, but too few, institutional investors are lending more responsibly, backing those businesses who understand, disclose and act on climate and nature. #Davos2020
4. Tools that help investors and businesses measure their climate-nature impact and risk exposure are becoming increasingly sophisticated but take up is patchy. #Davos2020
5. A new emphasis on an integrated Capitals (natural, human, social, financial) approaches holds the promise of delivering a ‘just transition’ to a zero carbon, nature positive world. #Davos2020
6. Proposed 2030 targets for no net loss/positive gain of nature need some serious unpacking, underpinning by good science, and the inclusion of strong safeguards to avoid ‘licence to trash’ scenarios. #Davos2020
7. A new era of sustainable finance is emerging, with Blackrock's letter, the sharp reduction of investments into fossil fuels & major accountancy firms agreeing on reporting standards. It will be important to track progress (capital flow to nature based solutions) vs rhetoric.
8. A significant minority of businesses are leading action on climate and nature through platforms like Business for Nature, the Capitals Coalition and WCMC’s Proteus Partnership. We need many more businesses to join these coalitions and to act urgently. #Davos2020
9. ‘Implementation frustration’ was palpable among those I spoke to at Davos. Targets are one thing - achieving them needs determination and setting clear pathways to measurable positive impact. #Davos2020
10. Subsidy reform and green fiscal policy are the elephants in the room - rarely discussed. They perhaps have the biggest potential to change things in time (just) to stay within 1.5 degrees and save 1 million species from extinction. #Davos2020
11. Land use and food systems are the new hot topic. A fundamental redesign of global agricultural production, distribution and consumption is coming within a decade. #Davos2020
12. The big unknown is tipping points in consumer behaviour and psychology which has the potential to transform economies almost overnight. #Davos2020
13. No one talked about population scenarios in the context of achieving the SDGs - but perhaps I missed that session. #Davos2020
14. Yes, Davos is elitist, but there’s also an extraordinary collection of remarkable people there with brilliant ideas for making the world a better place. #Davos2020
15. Greta kept it real and everyone’s eye on the prize - a thriving, prosperous and habitable Earth 🐘🦋🌳🌍 #Davos2020
