Some deets on the cause of #CanberraFires. An army troop transport helicopter like this one, an MHR90, used a strong landing light during a reconnaisance mission.
The light was necessary to help it land safely in the smoky conditions. But it created enough heat to ignore the grass underneath it.
Lieutenant-General Greg Bilton says the fire started radpily under the helicopter, which was damaged, but was able to take off and return to RAAF Fairbairn.
The army has now stopped using certain helicopters in very smoky and difficult conditions while it continues its investigation
