The Chinese police are using drones with speakers to talk to citizens rather than getting close to them.

Immediate reaction: very big Brotherish. The surveillance state materialized. The next step after red light cameras, body cams, etc.
With that said, this may grow in popularity for a few reasons.

1) Police can now engage potentially violent suspects without threat of physical harm to their person. This may decrease fear-related overreactions.

2) As “remote work for police”, could see some preferring this.
3) On the third hand, if the police are physically separated from the people they are policing, that could lead to alienation. And less qualms about the use of force.

4) America arguably pioneered drones for “policing” of remote war zones. See Eye in the Sky, Good Kill, etc.
