while Trump celebrates death of Al Qaeda leader in Yemen, Trump administration is trying to protect AQ franchise in Syria (HTS). US Ambassador Jeffrey says "we have not seen them [Al Qaeda's Syrian branch] planning or carrying out international terrorism attacks". Trump admin,
2/ like Obama admin before it, has complete lost the plot of 2001 AUMF which is authority for US military presence: it was to eradicate AQ and its offshoots - including HTS and its leader al-Joulani. HTS was founded by al-Baghdadi as offshoot of Al Qaeda in Iraq.
3/ instead of sticking to its mission, US has gotten so consumed with great power rivalry that it's actively protecting and making excuses for an organization (HTS) founded at al-Baghdadi's commission and which pledged allegiance to AQ's Zawahiri. Madness.

First, ISIS is metastasized offshoot of Al Qaeda in Iraq which arose from conditions
2/ in Iraq arising from US invasion and occupation.

Second, US, UK, Qatar, Saudi, Turkey and others armed and financed opposition factions in Syria who, together with Al Qaeda, also financed and armed by West and Gulf States, created the outlaw regions of which Jeffrey complains
3/ as long as Trump allows his foreign policy to be dictated by people like Jeffrey, he might as well turn his entire foreign policy over to Vindman and Ciaramella.

sensible article in NYT nytimes.com/2020/02/06/wor… showing implausibility of US attribution of attack near Kirkuk, which killed US contractor, to Iraqi militia (Kataib Hz) when ISIS remnants active in area. I made same observation almost immediately.
2/ US used this (almost certainly) false attribution to kill 25 Iraqi soldiers fighting ISIS in western Iraq hundreds of miles away in blindside attack by supposed "ally". Like Israel, which also attacks Iraqi anti-ISIS soldiers, it called them "Iranian proxies" to "justify".
3/ this murder of Iraqi soldiers naturally led to large protests against US embassy in Baghdad, to which US responded by assassination of Qasem Soleimani, the most prominent anti-ISIS and anti-AlQaeda military leader in the region.

Pompeo demanded state.gov/escalation-of-… that Syrian govt comply with "all provisions of UNSCR 2254". 2254 unscr.com/en/resolutions… called on states "to eradicate the safe haven [AlQaeda] established over significant parts of Syria" and
2/ stated that ceasefire "will NOT apply to offensive or defensive actions" against AlQaeda and "entities associated with Al Qaeda". Brett McGurk, former US envoy to region, famously stated that "Idlib Province is largest al-Qaeda safe haven since 9/11" facebook.com/watch/?v=21762…
3/ Syrian (and Russian) actions in Idlib are totally within scope of UN 2254. It is US that has been violating UN 2254 by demanding the end to efforts to eradicate AlQaeda safe haven in Idlib and by its support for AlQaeda in Idlib through weapons and supplies.

Amid the ongoing conflict in NW #Syria, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (#HTS) continues to evolve in intriguing ways - into a more politically mature & intelligent jihadist movement.

It's current leadership clearly seeks to position itself somewhere between #MuslimBrotherhood & #AlQaeda.
There's now little question that #HTS no longer represents #AlQaeda.

It's clearly still an extremist movement, but signs continue to add up indicating that it's developing into something qualitatively different than the Jabhat al-Nusra of 2014-15 - a "Shami #Taliban," perhaps.
Most recently in the public space, #HTS issued a statement acknowledging its willingness to abide by an externally-negotiated (by #Turkey, #Iran & #Russia) ceasefire.

That was a first.

Its never happened before in #Syria & it's not a move any #AlQaeda affiliate would ever take.

Trump infamously referred to developing nations as “shithole” countries and Mexican immigrants and asylum seekers are rapists. His budget cuts go after the nation’s most vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly.
That’s apparently not enough. Now the Trump administration is trying to literally define the poor out existence by artificially lowering a poverty threshold already seen as insufficiently stringent to capture the true ranks of America’s poor.
