The Federal Ministry of Health has confirmed a coronavirus disease disease (COVID-19)case in Lagos State, Nigeria. This was confirmed on the 27th of February, 2020 as the first case to be reported in the country since the outbreak in China in January 2020. ⛱
An Italian citizen who works in Nigeria and returned from Milan, Italy to Lagos, Nigeria on the 25th of February 2020, was confirmed by the virology laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, a part of the laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for disease control.
The patient is however clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos. Thankfully Govt via the Federal Ministry of Health, has been strengthening measures to ensure an outbreak is controlled & contained.
The multi-sectoral coronavirus preparedness group led by the Nigeriacentre for disease control (NCDC) promptly activated its national emergency operations centre and will work closely with Lagos State health authorities in firm response for effective control measures.
We are hereby assured that prompt preparedness capabilities has been implemented since the first confirmation in china and all the resources made available by the Govt will be deployed to respond to this case. All patient’s contacts are currently being identified since entry.
We are advised by the Federal Ministry Of Health to note that most people who become infected may experience only mild illness and recover easily, but this can be more severe in others, particularly the elderly & persons with other underlying chronic illnesses.
At this point we must take personal responsibility of our health and maintain hand and respiratory hygiene to protect ourselves and others. Hand wash with soap and water must be a routine with alcohol based hand sanitizer.
Maintain your distance from anyone coughing or sneezing. If you have serious cough and cold, kindly stay at home and avoid crowded areas. If you feel unwell with symptoms like fever, cough & difficulty in breathing please call NCDC toll free numbers 0800 970 0000-0010.
Stay informed via official channels (Radio/TV as disseminated through Federal Ministry of Health, Lagos Health Ministry and NCDC) on the latest developments about Coronavirus (COVID-19). Keep your eyes peeled and be careful out there. ⛑ @SIAF_NG
