Cooperation & economic integration in the Nile Basin, especially b/n Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt can bring peace & prosperity for the region’s 250m people. #Sudan could irrigate more food, while Ethiopia can power us all under less loss to irrigation.
To move from the current Cold War into cooperation, we must see the Nile river system as a resource to be maximized by all of us in the region. With a rising Africa full of aspirations, sole Egyptian ownership of the Nile with a small allowance for Sudan is no longer tenable.
Unfortunately, this is unacceptable for #Egypt.

For Ethiopia, we have even more reasons to build the #GERD. Egypt’s attempts to continue to be the sole beneficiary of the Nile has greatly contributed towards our political instability for a very long time.

Given Egypt’s continued head in the sand policy, only filling and operation of the GERD in a way that builds confidence downstream can kickstart us all towards cooperation
Completing GERD & operating it responsibly is not optional. It is the only way to ensure the region goes from a cat and mouse game into one of cooperation...once and for all. The GERD will take away any incentives for Egypt to destabilize us & usher in cooperation.

My parents & grandparents generations lived beyond 80. Quite a few 90+. Some even 100+. They remained healthy & strong until the end. One famous uncle, devoid of any major illnesses up until he reached 96, said on his deathbed “በሽታ መጣ ሞት መጣ።“
Here’s what I saw the old timers do:

1. They were all deeply spiritual, attended church daily & prayed several times during a day. My grandma had a መቁጠሪያ which helped her focus. This was a form of meditation. She had also become መነኩሴ & entirely devoted to the spiritual
Family was everything to the old timers. They had big families & lived together. Much time was spent to celebrate, grieve w/family. Being together was like medicine. They believed “የሰው መድሃኒት ሰው ነው”...

2/ Sadat was the Egyptian President of the Yom Kippur War, and became known as the “Hero of the Crossing” (of the Suez Canal). As a result of the outcome of the war, Israel recognized Egypt’s military strength and the US tried to bring Egyptians and Israelis to the peace table.

My take on the latest saga relating to the #GERD, mainly focusing on the key element of the official joint statement of #Egypt, #Ethiopia, #Sudan, #US & #WorldBank which was released following the meeting held in the US on 6th of November 👇

The key word is "INVOKED" 1/9
#Egypt achieved its main goal by getting #Ethiopia to agree to invoke Article 10 of the 2015 Declaration of Principle should the ministers of the tripartite failed to reach an agreement by 15 January 2020. Ethiopia shouldn't have attended the meeting, let alone an agreement. 2/9
The fundamental question is: why is #Egypt now keen on invoking Article 10 of the 2015 Declaration? Why not in the past? It's been nearly five years since this Declaration

Update:This came after Abdi sent members of Liyu police to disrupt ongoing meeting by hundreds of Ethio #Somalis in #DireDawa city. As partial result of the threat the city declared a military command post on Thursday. The gathering in Dire Dawa is called to denounce Abdi Illey.
Update: As per a gov source, since Thursday, thousands of members of the Liyu Police were told by Abdi to move into #Jigjiga. He was then asked to come with key members of his cabinet to AA to discuss the ongoing situation. "He declined & the security situation calls for caution"
