March Break. So many people in Ontario travel — across Canada, to the US, to Europe and beyond.

This is the first year I’m dreading it. And it’s because of the potential all that travel has to bring #COVID19 into our homes, schools and communities.
Public Health Canada has already advised against travel on cruise ships.

And yet, I know of young families determined to go, excited about their “last minute deals”, convinced that #COVID19 is “just another virus” amd will be easily prevented by good hand washing.
I am proud of Ontario’s Public Health units. They have gone flat out to understand and track #COVID19 and get information out to doctors, government and decisionmakers.

It is time for the rest of us to step up.
#COVID19 is not just another virus. So far, data from around the world shows:
* it’s faster than other viruses
* it’s deadlier than other viruses including the #flu.
* it hits those over 60 hard and fast.
* there is no vaccine
* there is no antiviral
Containment is the only way to decrease the number of hospitalizations and deaths from #COVID19.
If containment for #COVID19 fails, you quickly run out of:
-Hospital beds
-Ventilators
-Doctors & nurses
-Protective gear like N95 masks & even simple face masks
-Treatment like oxygen reservoirs & masks

You end up making terrible decisions between who to save & who to let die.
We can stop that from happening. Reduce the risk of #covid19 overwhelming our hospitals. Reduce the risk of our loved ones getting sick and dying.

Social distancing. It works.

Stop non-essential contact, travel & gatherings. Yes it’s inconvenient but my god, does it save lives.
* if you have mild symptoms from #Covid19, stay home. If you have severe symptoms, call 911 and tell them everything.
* work from home
* postpone trips
* do not attend large gatherings of people - concerts, museums, etc
* cancel sporting events
* postpone parties
* close schools
I know it sounds like overkill. But seriously Ontario must prepare for this eventuality.

You must start now.

Once there is community spread of #covid19, it is is a race against the clock. And from all accounts, that virus grows exponentially.
My mom is on immunosuppressants. My dad has diabetes and heart disease. I have 100s of patients like them — complex & elderly.

If I get #covid19 I will likely recover. They will likely not.

This is the time to batten down the hatches and protect our loved ones and communities.
