How S Korea was able to produce such a massive volume of test kits so fast

1) prepardness
2) elimination of bureaucratic red tape
3) full automation

Not mentioned in the article per se, but likely universal healthcare.

Tl;dr

Currently SK has tested over 230K people in 118 testing locations.

The large volume of test kits come from 4 different companies.

I.e. Seegene, produces a fully automated 1 step RT PCR (no separate extraction step) assay that uses 3 gene targets (RnRP, E and N).
021920 KCDC approved this test kit within a week after testing it on their own confirmed COVID19 samples.

021920 was when patient #31 happened, and large clusters of cases w Shincheonji started being identified.
Production ramped up significantly with even the companies PhDs and bioscientists working on production lines until demand was met.

Automation makes testing 4x faster - 94 samples/4 hrs.

They produce enough to test 1 mil pts every week (10k kits, each kit for 100 pts).
My editorial is that it was likely much easier to disseminate testing in SK as the healthcare system is universal and interconnected by one system. Multiple public health facilities exist in every neighborhood to provide general preventative healthcare (for example, vaccines).
Woops typo, test approved 021220
