High school/college science teachers/students: check out the online Science of the Solar System. It is 100% free and a top rated online science class. The Coursera class starts March 30th and is organized weekly. I'm spending today pulling the content out of Coursera... (1/)

This class can easily be adapted for a high school elective science/astronomy class, as well as intro for non-scientists college class, but also functions for my own intro for graduate students. The lectures are very accessible, instructors can then add their own.. (3/)

It's now been a year since the Zwicky Transient Facility has been operating at Palomar Observatory. So it is time to answer the question everyone should have been (but no one was? maybe?) asking. Is Planet Nine in the public ZTF archive already?

The answer SHOULD be "probably not." ZTF runs on the relatively small 48-inch Schmidt telescope at Palomar (discoverer of Eris, Makemake, Gonggong, Sedna, and more), so unless P9 is brighter than anticipated it shouldn't show up there.
Our latest analysis (below), though, allows the possibility of P9 being closer and thus brighter than we originally thought. So it is worth combing through the ZTF data to see.

Three years ago @kbatygin and I proposed the existence of Planet Nine because we noticed two strange things about the most distant objects in the solar system.

First, Kuiper belt objects with distant, very eccentric orbits are predominantly aligned in one direction. They should be more or less randomly oriented in space. Something has to cause that.

Second, the orbits of these bodies are mainly tilted in one direction. Also odd.

A distant massive planet on an inclined eccentric orbit very simply and naturally provides an explanation to these two key observations and to a slew of observations we weren't even trying to explain at the time. The Planet Nine hypothesis was born.

Final night (of 7!) at the @SubaruTelescope . Once again a spectacular looking one. I haven't had 7 nights of good data in a row since, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, ever? My feeling is that *if* we are going to find Planet Nine with Subaru these are the data in which we will find it.
This week's data covers something like the ~85% confidence region of where we think Planet Nine is (except for the region of the Milky Way galaxy, which we'll talk about later).
If P9 is in the region we have surveyed, I'd say we have a 90-95% chance of detecting it. 5-10% of the time it might be too close to a star and we miss it. But we are trying hard to prevent that problem by looking on multiple nights.

So context: I teach non-majors. I have done this exclusively for 12 years. For many science faculty, this is the worst thing ever - and when I started I wasn't too thrilled - but over the years I've come to embrace it and *LOVE* it.
Stus often come into my classes with high science anxiety. They either have had bad experiences with science teachers, or they think they can't learn science because they were never really taught it in a way that makes sense to them. The hardcore focus on facts drives them away

It is designed for one purpose - to initiate and guide a conversation. What conversation? Your interview.
AS such - TWO PAGES, PLEASE!! No more. No less. Everyone over 18 has two pages of stuff they have done.

ORDER - most recent first, please.

Structure - always tell me where and when. Where did you do the thing and when did you do it. Jobs, work exp, volunteering - always.

Free college = higher taxes.
"FREE" colleges would cost TRILLIONS Yearly. They still have to pay for heating, electricity, water, maintanence, computers, classroom materials TEACHERS +
more. @ewarren has not thought about the TRILLIONS it takes to run the scools.

All time high of 82% graduated high school.
Free college would entice (my opinion) another 20% more high school grads.

20% more of the 40% of ungraduated but still passed the GED.

 Like #solar, #wind power faces intermittency problems, so it MUST be paired w conventional power generation unless u r ok having your electricity supply die with the wind. This is particularly the case w old-style 40m turbines in many early-adopter locations like #PalmSprings

 Wind’s #sitingrestrictions r different from solar. #Turbines CAN b installed above crops.
Wind CANNOT b installed on slopes (winds r 2erratic, so things alternate between no power & snapped towers) nor above 10k feet (thin air = less force on the turbine blades).
