In the face of the #COVID19 crisis, we are all vulnerable. The #coronavirus has shown that it does not discriminate - but many refugees, those forcibly displaced, stateless persons and migrants are at greater risk. bit.ly/2wUAEOD
3/4 of the 🌍’s refugees & many migrants are hosted in developing regions where health systems are already overwhelmed & under-capacitated, & live in:
-overcrowded camps
-settlements
-make-shift shelters
-reception centers
where they lack access to health services, clean 🚰 & 🚽.
The situation for refugees & migrants held in formal & informal places of detention, in cramped & unsanitary conditions, is particularly worrying. Considering the lethal consequences a #COVID19 outbreak would have, they should be released without delay. bit.ly/2wUAEOD
#COVID19 can be controlled only if there is an inclusive approach which protects every individual’s rights to life & health. Migrants and refugees are disproportionately vulnerable to exclusion, stigma and discrimination, particulary when undocumented.
To avert a #COVID19 catastrophe, governments must do all they can to protect the rights and the health of everyone. Protecting the rights and the health of all people will in fact help control the spread of the #coronavirus. bit.ly/2wUAEOD
It's vital that everyone, including all migrants and refugees have equal access to health services and are included in national responses to #COVID19, including prevention, testing and treatment. bit.ly/2wUAEOD
Inclusion will help not only to protect the rights of refugees and migrants, but will also protect public health and stem the global spread of #COVID19. bit.ly/2wUAEOD
To ensure refugees and migrants have adequate access to national health services, States may need additional financial support. This is where the world’s financial institutions can play a leading role in making funds available. bit.ly/2wUAEOD #COVID19

No words can describe how I feel today. I have read the news about the bodies found in the back of a lorry with lots of horro. It brought back memories of my journey when we were stuck nearly to death in lorries and tankers and freezers with meat and chicken

The death of fellow humans whose bodies were found near Essex had me losing my mind. I was there before in 2015. I can fell what they have been through. I can hear them screaming to death because I was there. I can feel them clinging onto life but in-vain

The screams of these people still haunts me. I can never forget that moment when I touched death while being kept in the back of the freezer lorry. I can never forget the eyes of those who were with me on that tanker, no air, no light nothing but the smell of death

What does Jesus say about #migrants? He doesn't say help the stranger only if it's risk free, or convenient, or the stranger has the right papers, or is from the same ethnic or religious group. No, we are meant to show mercy to the stranger regardless.
That's one of the main points of Jesus's Parable of the Good Samaritan. The Samaritan who helps the beaten man does so at considerable risk to himself: he was exposing himself to robbers and beatings on the "Road to Jericho," a notoriously dangerous road. But he helps him anyway.
And the way that we treat strangers will be one litmus test for entrance into heaven. Because the way we treat strangers (and by that the Bible means refugees, migrants and displaced persons, with or without "papers") will, says Jesus, determine our entrance into heaven (Mt. 25).

I joined DFID on 9/11 (11/09/2001) as a Social Development Adviser.
Not drunk on the MDGs, but slightly merry.
I had never heard of governance. 1/25
I started work in 1993 in health research (Tz, malaria; drug prescribing), then disability inclusion (India) & consulting in health, WATSAN.
After 6 yrs in Kolkata I heard that DFID was recruiting regional specialists.
I fancied myself as a DFID South Asia specialist! 2/25
....DFID sent me to Malawi.
I hadn’t heard of ‘Governance’.
But slowly realised that I had worked on it – local govt, politics, rights in health; water tariffs, participation & transparency, health management.
So Governance in sectors, not Governance as a thing. 3/25

For the last 24 hours I've been texting & calling with refugees in Libya. 500 are apparently stuck in a Tripoli prison w/o food & water after heavy fighting broke out two days ago. They say their guards ran away, leaving them alone.
These refugees are men, women & children. They tried to cross the Mediterranean earlier this year, but were found by Italian boats, who turned them over to the EU-backed Libyan coastguard, who put them in prison. The conditions were already terrible before the fighting started.
Oh the phone earlier I could hear children crying & what sounded like bombing in the distance. The refugees say everyone's incredibly frightened. "We hear machine guns, tanks, big bombs, last night from the roof it was all fire."
