Free trade deals are chock full of sovereignty impingements. Getting *any* big deals thru parliament will be hard
Particularly given Brexiteers have made rejecting a close trade relationship with the EU all about sovereignty. You reap what you sow.
And wait til people realise there are trade offs. It’s not possible to have “free” trade with the globe. One deal will limit opportunities for others.
There’s no evidence at all that leaving the Customs Union will result in anything other than downside. Prof Minford’s dream of UK opening its mkts to industry destroying raiders from other countries will never happen.
Harsh truth is being part of the biggest trading bloc in the world was, & will continue to be, an advantage not a hindrance.
Worth considering why May has assured 3rd countries like Japan our deals with them will be a copy of their deal with the EU. We will need them to be. We cannot have divergence.
Day I went from being a Leaver to a Remainer was when I realised Leave campaigners needed EU to break up for their promises for a new more powerful UK to be realised.
Some like Farage were honest about this. Others weren’t. Hannan’s books are clear on the need for competition not co-operation between European nation states but he doesn’t admit what this means openly.
While the EU continues to exist as a trading bloc we & our future trading partners will need our deals to mirror their deal with the EU. Divergence will mean problems.
Leave campaigners even admit how rules of origin limit trading opportunities for 3rd countries but get no further than “this isn’t fair!” in their thinking.
