If I told you that a pol supported by Russia who welcomed that support was elected & immediately began to undercut US alliances, the international system & weaken America's standing worldwide (including through troop redeployments) what would you think was key part of that story?
Should the Russia-Trump cooperation be investigated? Yes. Are those in Congress trying to impede it undermining US national security? Yes. Should those who conspired with Russians be prosecuted? Yes. But let's not lose sight of bigger picture. Real damage being done daily.
US seems certain to come out of the Trump era dramatically weakened on multiple levels. JCPOA pullout will undercut alliances and weaken leverage against a natsec risk...and damage our credibility. NK deal could involve big damaging concessions on US capabilities in ROK.
Pulling out of TPP, Paris Accord, attacking NATO, other troop withdrawals, attacking refugees for being Muslim and offending more than a billion people worldwide, the list goes on. America built an international system that largely kept us and world safe for 75 years.
Someday we may see Trump's greatest crime as being the damage he has done to that system and our standing and the aid and assistance he has offered our enemies and rivals. (Including by not doing anything material to stop further Russian interference in upcoming elections.)
We need to be able to do what's right and prosecute these guys where they deserve to be prosecuted...but let's keep the bigger picture in mind too. The stakes are too high.
