1) As Most Quebecers prepare to return to work and school in 2 weeks' time, it’s worth revisiting the #COVID10 #pandemic in the province. In this thread, I will compare this point in time with the same periods in the last two years. Unfortunately, the comparison is not favorable.
2) This is not to suggest that Quebec will be crashing into an apocalyptic 8th wave this fall, but simply to underscore that the #pandemic is still with us, still churning out new virus variants, still hospitalizing people and still killing Quebecers amid stalled vaccination.
3) On Aug. 19, Quebec declared 999 new #COVID cases; a total of 1,997 hospitalizations (down by 14 from the day before); a dozen new fatalities, raising the death toll to 16,207. ICU stays were up by two, increasing the tally to 47.

This is a plot of the daily reported #COVID19 (c)ases (light blue), (h)ospitalizations (light orange), and (f)atalities (light red) in #Switzerland. In addition, I plotted the cumulative numbers added up over 14 days for (c) and (f) and over 22 days for (h), corresp. dark colors.
What do we learn from the data? The second #COVID19 wave in #Switzerland has reached levels in all indicators (c,h,f) (somewhat) larger than the first wave. The peak daily reported (c)ases are a factor 8.5 times higher than in the first wave.
The peak reported (f)atalities and (h)ospitalizations per day are 1.5 and 1.25 times higher than in the first wave. Both likely have not reached their maximum yet. Also (h) data comes in with a delay of up to 7 days from the current date, while for (c) and (f) it is ~3 days.

The smoking gun of govt care home policy?

Govt advice from 2 April.

“Some of these patients may have #COVOD19. All can be cared for in care homes.”

“Negative tests are not required before transfer/admission to the care home.” #coronavirus via @Goldbug40 gov.uk/government/pub…
Here’s a link to the PDF (p.4).

What’s almost as shocking as this document is the fact that it’s been in the public domain for 6 weeks & no journalist has looked at it.

The same happened with PM’s #GreenwichSpeech from 2 Feb which I posted a month ago. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…
If you haven’t seen @borisjohnson’s #GreenwichSpeech you can view it here👇

It’s the smoking gun of the govt’s #HerdImmunity strategy. The entire #THREAD is well worth a read if you have a bit of time on your hands. #COVID19 #coronavirus #COVIDー19 #Covid

Today we announced that @TheJusticeDept and @HHSGov partnered to distribute more than half a million medical supplies confiscated from price gougers to those on the frontline of the #COVID10 response in New York and New Jersey—including approximately 192,000 N95 respirator masks.
The @FBI discovered the supplies during an enforcement operation by DOJ's COVID-19 Hoarding and Price Gouging Task Force on March 30 and alerted HHS. We used our authority under Defense Production Act to order that the supplies be immediately furnished to the US.
In addition to the N95 respirator masks, the supplies found included 598,000 medical grade gloves and 130,000 surgical masks, procedure masks, N100 masks, surgical gowns, disinfectant towels, particulate filters, bottles of hand sanitizer, and bottles of spray disinfectant.

A few thoughts on things we don't know:
Federal modelling on how many Canadians could die due to COVID-19. Some provinces & other countries have released theirs (or press found out and published them). Not clear on why govt hasn't yet released this. #cdnpoli #coronavirus #COVID10
Thing #2 we don't know but may get a slightly better sense of later today: what kind of debt projection we will be seeing? The US one released is staggering. Many countries are in the same boat.

Today the PM said the wage subsidy is the biggest economic program in our history
Thing #3: is there & how big is the gap btw what front line responders need for PPE and what we have now and anticipate receiving soon? Govt says there is enough but frontline workers say PPE rationed. Why is there this dissonance? How much PPE do we have? How long will it last?

#COVID10 QUESTION: How is public safety staffing and response times likely to be impacted due to exposures to #COVID19? We asked @fred_burton VP of Intelligence @Stratfor , who at one point was a volunteer member of the @BCCRS. Follow this thread for the answer. Image
ANSWER: "Fire departments have minimum staffing requirements for engine and ladder companies. As firefighters and paramedics go into lock down, there are only so many fixed assets that you have available.
In the D.C. area, there are robust mutual aid plans and federal firefighters, but that's somewhat unique as you look around the country. The nature of the work also demands close proximity to each other.
