Okay so I have something to say about all of you attacking former Pres. #GeorgeWBush today for his powerful and timely words: please STOP. Let’s put him into context shall we?! 1/
2/ #GeorgeWBush was a president 8 months when 9-11 happened. He ran and won on a domestic agenda. He did not oppose #VotingRights (he signed REAUTHORIZATION in 2006) nor did he go after women’s #ReproductiveRights Full stop!
3/ Yes, he is a son of wealth and privilege. So were almost all of our US Presidents. Yes, he wasn’t the most articulate of our Presidents. All true. However, does anyone think him not a decent- God fearing man? Because he is.

Today, I filed the #RBG Act to remove barriers to accessing abortion care in North Carolina. Our state has the fourth-highest number of restrictions in the country. These barriers serve no medical purpose. Instead, they interfere in decisions about whether & when to have a child.
The #RBG Act will expand access to healthcare, which is especially important during a pandemic. The public health crisis has limited access dramatically at a time when family planning is more important than ever for many people. #ReproductiveRights
As #RBG stated, the decision to have a child is personal. "...when the government controls that decision for her, she is being treated as less than a full adult human responsible for her own choices." We must allow women to make their own decisions, free from interference. #ncpol

🚨New Year, New Paper 🚨

Remember research before #COVID19 - findings from our 3 year study on access to #abortion during #zika in Brazil, El Salvador and Colombia in press now W/ @socscimed
We found that whilst #zika spurred abortion demand amongst individual womxn and global debate on #reproductiverights - the heath emergency didn’t change national regulation or policy change for abortion access.
This was on account of the narrow policy path dependency in #globalhealthsecurity focused on epidemiology which did not consider gendered needs or the broader social effects of epidemics, combined with deeply conservative context + recent political history

We are horrified by reports that Irwin County Detention Center in GA has been performing nonconsensual mass hysterectomies on detained people in @ICEGov custody.
Coercive sterilization is a human rights violation and perpetrators of these abuses must be held accountable!
The US has a long history of coercive sterilization. Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities and people with disabilities continue to be harmed by these human rights violations, including in detention settings.

Good piece by #Maine political science professor @ASFried: #SusanCollins told CNN she won't say whether she supports Trump's reelection b/c she's in a tight race:

“In parts of the state President Trump is very popular, in parts of the state he’s very unpopular." thread
.@ASFried: #SusanCollins's refusal to say if she'll vote for Trump contrasts sharply w/ her 2016 statement saying she thought he was unsuitable for office b/c he failed to treat people w/ respect, "an idea that should transcend politics.”

Not any more.
#SusanCollins recently said she was forthright w/ #Maine voters about Trump in '16 because she “was not up for re-election."

1>She didn't let that stop her in previous years when she was running in a pres election year.

2>Is there anything more Collins than that? @ASFried

Things I am over - hypocrisy and inconsistency

1) If peaceful #protest on the steps of government buildings is a right, than it also is on a football field #TakeAKnee, in a park, etc

#Thread #equity #rant (1/8)
2) If we ban #guns from some buildings in the interest of security, that means for all people - not just those that aren't white

3) If #BlueLivesMatter, do not risk our brave protectors’ health by protesting near them without #masks

#MichiganProtest (2/8)
4) If you are not wearing #facemasks given your personal #liberty, than why do women not get extended the same for #Reproductiverights

5) If all life is sacred, than why would we sacrifice 2-3% of our population by #ReopenAmerica too quickly?

@ninaturner Gender is an accident of birth not deserving of loyalty. It doesn't overcome a record & policies. Sanders, who happens to be male, was fighting for my #ReproductiveRights in 1972, before Roe v Wade, at a time Warren was supporting & voting for the GOP.
@ninaturner Sanders, who happens to have been born male, led in fighting #domesticviolence against women. He even got the NFL to help. But, it's sexist to support him? 🤔⁉️#BernieYellsForUs and always has.

@ninaturner Breast cancer is one of a woman's greatest fears. Even though he happened to be born male, Sanders 1st legislative 'win' came out of his concern for us & he knew that scientists needed more information to find causes & cures. In 1992.

There is more than one religion practiced in this nation and no religious point of view should guide our legal processes. In fact Jesus, who is the mentor for my Christian faith, healed a woman suffering with a reproductive issue—a hemorrhaging womb—for twelve years #WomensRights
Jesus' model of compassion and love for those on the margins and those needing healing and health care drives my commitment to health care for all, and my pro-choice position. #WomensRights #ReproductiveRights #LoveTransforms

Trump’s WORLDWIDE Effect on the Global Reproductive Rights of Women

Trump and his conservative Christian-centric administration are using positions of authority to impose religious policies on long-established reproductive rights that put women around the world at risk.

Ronald Reagan signed the Mexico City Policy in 1984. This sweeping mandate against reproductive freedom around the globe denied,

“US federal funds to any organisation involved in providing abortion services overseas or counselling women about them.”
Though revoked by every Democrat and reinstated by every Republican
since, Trump has taken up the cause with renewed vigor.

Every time the global gag has been reimposed by a Republican president, rates of back street and self-administered abortions have increased.

Consider a woman who is told that her fetus has not developed a diaphragm. She chooses to spare her newborn the inevitable suffocation within minutes of birth by aborting as early as possible. Is she any less heroic than the mother who signs the paperwork for her 17yo to sign up
for military service during wartime even though she has conflicted views about the ‘mission’? I’ll ask this again after I make a few points. Will you consider my question again afterwards?
Pregnancy prior to 21 weeks (age of “viability”—you’ve heard this term before) is a woman
with an attached, growing grouping of cells that are as much a part of HER BODY as her own kidneys. She has the ability to donate a kidney and everyone likely survives and dies by other means later. If a woman could donate a healthy zygote or a fetus at that stage, we wouldn’t be

When I went to end my ability to reproduce, there were no protesters. No 1 tried to talk me out of it, talked about God or murder, or made me get my wife's approval. The surgery took 10 minutes & was covered by insurance. It should be that easy for women.…

so, in light of the unprecedented assault on women’s #ReproductiveRights across the country, I thought I’d share a little bit of my experience in hopes of improving education out there & to normalize something that isn’t being talked about much.
men, we’re a critical part of this discussion. not only must we stand up for the women in our lives, as their lives can literally depend upon it, we must also acknowledge & address a part we can play in it (outside of advocacy.)
last year, I had a vasectomy. we have 2 kids. we’re happy with 2. we’re done. for us, this decision seemed simple.

Louisiana could lose two abortion clinics this week and here's why...

(with gifs)…
In Louisiana a law was created for "a physician performing or inducing an abortion” to “have active admitting privileges at a hospital that is located not further than thirty miles from the location at which the abortion is performed..." 2/
If this law sounds familiar that's because Texas did the exact same thing but it was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2016. 3/

The Zioness Movement applauds @Alyssa_Milano and @DebraMessing for calling out the leaders of the Women’s March for their hateful rhetoric and their continued association with bigots and anti-Semites like Louis Farrakhan.

We stand with the women and men who have over the years demonstrated for a better, stronger, more just America; marched against racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia and xenophobia; and opposed the cruel, anti-women, anti-immigrant policies of the Trump administration.

Zioness rejects the divisive examples of Linda Sarsour, Tamika Mallory and others who claim to be “leaders” of women, while they continue to support anti-Semitic, homophobic figures like Farrakhan and make consistent efforts to demonize the Jewish community in progressive spaces.

Let's have a conversation about #healthcare that's larger than who pays for it shall we? For this thread I'm going to assume we can pass #MedicareForAll and insurance is no longer an issue. Now let's talk about what problems would still exist for women's healthcare /1
In this scenario #Medicare4All has been passed with the repeal of #Hyde so we don't have a problem funding abortions for anyone! But wait...does that overturn #TRAP laws? Waiting periods? Personhood bills? Heartbeat bills? 20 week bans? Specifically fund Planned Parenthood /2
Unfortunately #MedicareForAll wouldn't overturn all those pesky anti abortion laws meaning abortion would be insured if (and that's a big if) you have access to it. The reason you need Planned Parenthood still is because not all doctors choose to perform abortion /3
