The line that Parliamentary control weakens the UK's negotiating position is confused, exceptionalist and irrelevant. THREAD. news.sky.com/story/amp/pm-r…
The "logic" is that the EU is desperate for the UK to Remain and if it knows Parliament might vote to Remain will give us a bad deal to ensure Parliament does vote to Remain. /1
It's confused because Parliament is supreme and if there is sufficient support in Parliament it can mandate Remain whether there's a clause in the Withdrawal Bill or not. /2
It's exceptionalist because it assumes the EU is so desperate for the UK to Remain that it would offer a deal that is bad for EU businesses too in the vague hope it might cause MPs to change their minds about Remaining. The reality is that the UK leaving is already priced in. /3
Moreover, the EU has already said - with abundant clarity - what is on offer given the UK'S red lines. It has very limited room to change that offer. The only real changes can come from us. /4
And it's irrelevant because, even taking the claim at face value, it doesn't justify giving the leader of a minority Govt free reign to inflict "meltdown" on her country - which it can't sensibly be said the Referendum gave her mandate for - without consent of Parliament. /ENDS
