1/ If I may have a moment of your time...

I just wrapped up a five-part series of columns, reflections on a divided America in the age of Trump. I enjoyed writing them immensely. They're not the kind of columns that tend to grab attention online, more kind of essay-ish thingies.
2/ I tweeted links to them as they ran, but I'm going to put all five in this thread, in case anyone cares to read through them as a compiled series. I don't know if they offer any great revelations about anything, and some bits are just kind of silly.
3/ But I like them, and as with most writers, it takes a lot for me to say I like something I wrote.

1/ Some observations on the Jim Acosta situation: I watched the exchange just moments after it happened, then sent out a tweet saying the woman who tried to get his microphone should be lose her job. Swiftly, I was hit with a bot-driven response.
2/ The responses, as you'd expect from bots, were strikingly similar. It was either "Acosta assaulted that woman" or "he karate chopped her arm." (I thought the karate reference was odd, since nothing in the live video suggest such a motion. It's also just a random word choice.)
3/ My mentions swiftly filled up with other MAGA accounts - maybe real, maybe more bots - parroting the same language. That soon became the narrative on the right: Acosta attacked that woman! Hours later, the White House released a statement making a similar allegation.

1/ A few quick thoughts on Trump's decision to send more than 5,000 U.S. troops to the border to confront the super not-deadly caravan that is two months away and may never arrive at all. We know this is a pathetic political ploy to rile up possible midterm voters who live in...
2/ ...near-constant fear of non-white people. Using the military for fear-mongering before an election is bad enough on its own. But then there's the cost. This won't be cheap. You don't move and then support a force that large for free. But I think the most overlooked thing...

1/ A good number of people - and I'm hearing from many of them today - actually believe the migrant caravan is going to waltz across our southern border and vote for Democrats in the midterms. Setting aside the fact that the caravan won't get here until nearly two months...
2/ ...after the midterms, the imaginary belief that 5,000 or so people can just hop across the border into our country is jaw-droppingly stupid. That's not how any of this works, and people who honestly believe that are beyond help. I can't educate someone who doesn't believe...
3/ ...that facts exist. People who think that way should embarrassed by their own ignorance. But they're not, and that's because this country has somehow managed to glorify and insulate stupidity. It's a damn badge of honor at this point. And that needs to stop.

This sounds like the US is planning to strike #Syria and Trump will remain in the US to closely monitor responses by #Russia. This is terrible.
