1. Our account’s received a lot of tweets lately from Trump supporters who can’t comprehend why anyone will bother to contribute to a socialist society if all work is voluntary. Hence this thread. Firstly, socialism won’t exist until a clear majority know what it is and want it.
2. With socialism brought about by maybe 80% or more of people, most of those who didn’t vote for it would nevertheless go along with the democratic wishes of the majority, participate and contribute. Any tiny minority able to work, but who refused to do so, would be irrelevant.
3. So why would people bother to work if they could do nothing and live off the efforts of others? Those thinking this way assume avoiding work is an innate human quality. It isn’t. The reason people wrongly think this way is because their opinion’s been formed under capitalism.
4. People try to avoid work NOW under capitalism because, understandably, they don’t like having to do jobs they hate for long hours and low pay. But let people work far fewer hours in jobs they enjoy, without exploitation by parasites, and then they won’t feel like being lazy.
5. Humans aren’t innately lazy. If that were true there wouldn’t be millions of people already doing unpaid voluntary work under capitalism. Socialism will remove all of today’s obstructions which inhibit voluntarism on a society-wide scale (need for money, competitiveness etc).
6. Humans aren’t inherently selfish and unwilling to help people they don’t know either. If true, then ‘ordinary’ people would never jump into rivers, run into burning buildings, intervene in violent situations etc to help complete strangers. But they do. Another myth crushed.
7. “Where is the incentive?” ask cynics. This should be obvious! Enjoyable jobs people want to do. Far shorter working week. No exploitation. No money worries. Free access to all goods and services. A nice home as a right. Amicable society. No burglaries. No wars. And much more.
