#CSPC2018 @sciencepolicy received support from @SciChefQC @FRQS1 @FRQSC @FRQ_NT. Notably Rémi is now co-chair of. @INGSciAdvice, and 2-5 Nov 2020 will be a joint INGSA-CSPC conference 🙌🙌🙌.

And congrats @SciChefQC for staying through one more power shift in Québec!

New interesting report, called NISR, National Inuit Strategy for Research, was highlighted as something to read by Paul Dufour. One recommendation touches @ChiefSciCan 's comment on integrating #scienceadvice from diff sources - a deputy sci advisor from territories #CSPC2018

Paul Dufour is a #scipol junkie, and he takes the issue of engaging new talent in #scipol seriously. There has been a tipping point, where students + post-docs have started paying attention. This panel comes with recommendations #CSPC2018

#sotlnorth (cc @ericbkennedy) is a Bootcamp on #scipol in Canada that brings knowledge and connections. Applications open soon, keep an eye out!

#CSPC2018 @tgruos is new. Co-President at @DSP_SPE that creates platforms for #scipol dialogue and is a springboard for trainees to get into #scipol. They also represent trainees in policy at fed & prov levels ➡️ sp-exchange.ca

As a French postdoc, she saw a friend in the lab (cc @Fanny_Dupuy) working nights and weekend on @DSP_SPE, then got hooked herself. These trainees are brave, and they learn by doing. They bring their own chairs to the table 🙌 #CSPC2018

#CSPC2018 @MadisonRilling is a member of #CIÉ, which works under the #FRQ (incl @FRQS1 @FRQSC @FRQ_NT) and the chief scientist @SciChefQC. His global role is to bring advice to the ministry, but in 2014 built up the #CIÉ to get advice of his own, from the #nextgen

#CIÉ exists in a lasting way within the governance structure of the #FRQ @SciChefQC. Every board in FRQ has a student member as well, @MadisonRilling sits at @FRQ_NT and @BelislePipon at @FRQS1. The next generation is at the table in Québec 👏👏👏 #CSPC2018

#CSPC2018 @DLEKirkwood works at @NRCan, as Chief Scientist. From a geology PhD, she stumbled upwards (don't we all?) into this position. This is a shop at NRCan on integrating science better into policy. Half the dept is #cdnsci and 70% budget is science.

Young folks out of university wanting #policy experience can join @NRCan via dedicated 3-year program. They hire 40-60 analysts per year. They also hire student scientists, who can be exposed to the #policy side. They also host @MitacsCanada #CSPF #scipol fellows #CSPC2018

Individual depts and agencies define the project before you apply for @MitacsCanada #cspf, you know what you are working on, you get broad training, you bring in fresh ideas. Next cohort applications open soon, in Ottawa and BC. Other prov to come! #CSPC2018

#CSPC2018 @tgruos expands on what @DSP_SPE has done so far and where we are going:

➡️ Public forums in #Montreal. This year, #cannabis and #CannabisAct, last year on #genomics w/ support from @CIHR_IRSC. These engage the public and incl scientists and policymakers

➡️ #Budget2018 presence via #Students4theReport #supportthereport, with support of 300,000 trainees

➡️ #Budget2019 presence via survey on scholarships and fellowships. Over 850 responders so far, to bring evidence to policy and rep the student voice.

@DSP_SPE is now bringing together trainee driven #scipol groups (!!) incl @TOSciPolicyNet #CIÉ with support from @ChiefSciCan @SciChefQC @MitacsCanada @univcan @ISSP_uOttawa @CAPSACSP and many others. More details to come 🙌

Both @SSHRC_CRSH and @NSERC_CRSNG folks speaking up in Q&A to find out more about trainee-led initiatives. Liz Boston @NSERC_CRSNG notes how more diverse careers incl #scipol need support. How do we convince profs? #CSPC2018

#CSPC2018 @tgruos says metrics drives what careers are supported. Broader definition of excellence would be a game-changer. Shout out to 2016 SPE white paper. @MadisonRilling agrees and cites that many other papers do so as well

#CSPC2018 @BelislePipon notes the patience of @SciChefQC in letting the #CIÉ grow and mature, to the point where they are both vital and viral in their impact at #FRQ. Allowing trainees to bloom by giving them a chance to do so is a key step

#CSPC2018 @tgruos says having a champion and mentor like @SciChefQC is one way to drive #scipol in the next generation, another is @DSP_SPE model of bringing your own chair and building it at grassroots level.

Q from student about how to get involved without resources? @tgruos says this is the point of having a network that can provide support and accessibility. You can start your own group, it's not always easy, but we @DSP_SPE will empower any who want to start their own! #CSPC2018

#CSPC2018 @MadisonRilling adds that if you get that seat (no matter how), make it sustainable so that other trainees can take that space as you move on.

Alana Westwood @NRCan #cspf @MitacsCanada shouts out to @E4Dca as fostering a network and training incubator as well. Not many get through selective programs like #CSPF though, how do we democratize opportunities? #CSPC2018
