At a Google News conference I heard a moving presentation by a Dalit man who pointed out that almost all US tech company hires of Indians were hires of Brahmin, in essence gaining diversity points in our country while perpetuating a caste system in theirs👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
Another way of looking at this, maybe, is as if @jack had posed with BLM activists only to be “white lives matter”ed by Valley SVPs in his company and elsewhere.
Anyway this scandal is a BFD in India, per the BBC. And of course abuse and harassment of women in India, especially Dalit women, is horrific.
You all know it takes a lot to make me sympathetic to @jack. I hope he/Twitter don’t apologize too hard for this. He may have not known he was kicking a hornets nest, but not a bad one to kick.
The name of that presenter is @mondalsudipto “Dalit Camera: How India’s “untouchable” class uses technology to tell their own stories”
The anti lower caste bigotry (and claims of reverse bigotry against the upper castes) in some of these replies is breathtaking but I witnessed the same in India. Not among everyone, but a lot.
As is true everwhere, sadly, some who once had absolute privilege, resent loss of that privilege, exaggerate the modest opportunities now presented to some of historically excluded and vilify them for those meager opportunities.
