The crisis we’re in didn’t begin with Trump. It’s the result of a badly corrupted system of government that serves the wealthy and capitalized on our worst instincts. Trump is the embodiment of that bad faith, the living and breathing personification of our ills.
Voting Trump out of office, holding him accountable, these are priorities, but the toxic environment that produced him has to be addressed and reformed. We have to think bigger, restore participatory democracy, change what’s at the heart of the country.
Trump is the moment where the scam gets laid bare. Everyone can see this emperor wears no clothes, but his corruption is completely in line with what politicians have been guilty of for decades. This is where it either changes or just becomes the norm.
If Trump goes down, it’s only because he was so blatant in his crimes and incompetent that they couldn’t be ignored. It’s a hidden leak that suddenly pours out of a ceiling. The leak is so much deeper than the surface corruption we’re seeing play out now.
This moment is where the old flawed system runs its course. We either think big, chart a new direction, and fundamentally change how our society operates, or we might never find our way out. It’s an opportunity, but the window either closes or flings wide open.
We can have a country where people are treated decently and the government serves their interests, but it can’t happen unless we reject Trump and the ideaology that birthed him.
