Helpful reminder that if you are experiencing super-cold temps, it's pretty important that you fill a balloon with water and food coloring and leave it outdoors overnight. 
Also acceptable: decorative cake pans. Have some fun with your vortices, people!
(It is worth doing this even if all you have is a simple pot or plastic bin! The food coloring freezes at a different temp than the water, so it makes cool tracks and gradients as they solidify.)
