It's a dangerous precedent for the U.S. but it also has precedence. Billionaire dictators Trump admired like Turkey's Tayyip Erdogan have played the same game. Erdogan declared a state of emergency in 2016. It allowed him to purge 150K civil servants and charge 77k opponents.

In January, he got new emergency powers. This time because of the financial crisis in Turkey.
We cannot afford to go down this road with a president who is the subject of a counterintelligence investigation, suspected of being a foreign agent, who takes instructions from the leader of a sworn enemy state. Legal challenges will follow but we can't ignore what he's doing.
This is an attack on democracy, launched from the executive, the White House, likely under orders from foreign forces. It attacks the notion of three separate but equal branches of government which the founding fathers created as a check and balance against foreign oppression.
