Why is Trump showing fresh signs of mental strain? Well:

This is a terrific, highly skeptical NYT deconstruction of William Barr's decision to jump in and clear Trump on obstruction, when Mueller pointedly did not do so.

First, the NYT strongly suggests decision was highly irregular and driven by politics:

Second, the NYT piece notes that Barr withheld critical information that would make it possible to evaluate his decision, and also was silent on what *Mueller's* intentions were in declining to exonerate Trump:

Finally, NYT piece decisively reveals weakness of one Barr's core rationales for clearing Trump -- idea that lack of conspiracy charges calls into question whether Trump had any motive for obstructing justice.

We should absolutely accept the verdict that Mueller did not find Trump campaign conspiracy with Russia. That appears to be unequivocal, and while we do need to see the report, I don't see any basis here for questioning this.
On obstruction, Barr's letter says not just that Mueller declined to make a prosecutorial decision, but also that the report "sets out evidence on both sides of the question." This means Congress *must* pursue the report, so it
can exercise basic oversight and inform the public.
Even those who accept collusion verdict (as I do) should want the report. Barr's letter says it details Russia's attack on our democracy.

Everyone should want full public reckoning of that. Those who opposed this probe also opposed this reckoning, which was/is indefensible.

It's so weird to see people on all sides gloating about Mueller concluding.

A great deal of wrongdoing and criminality has *already* been documented by Mueller and spinoff probes, and more investigations continue due to Mueller's efforts. 1/
Despite the sneering, at *worst,* those who were bullish on the probe were half right, in the sense that the Mueller probe was necessary to ferret out serious wrongdoing and criminality by people all around Trump.

This is so, even if they were not right on conspiracy charges. 2/
And those who dismissed Mueller probe throughout were only partly right *at best,* in that they downplayed an effort that, again, was needed to ferret out extensive wrongdoing/criminality, & to establish a great deal about Russian interference. Which was the original mission! 3/3
