This is a MASSIVELY troubling article. Its tone reflects just how far Trump has changed the trade narrative.

With Trump, no form of trade is a voluntary exchange between buyers and sellers. All of us are nothing more than a bargaining chip in his game.

nytimes.com/2019/04/01/us/…
Yet, more than two years into the Trump administration, what is the actual point of Trump's game?

Is it...

Reducing bilateral trade deficits?

This is unwinnable for basic economic reasons - they will simply pop up elsewhere.
Is it...

Fixing China's protection of IP and its mistreatment of foreign investors?

Really? Trump is working to allow American companies to better operate, produce and create jobs in China?

(Everywhere else on trade, Trump cares about AMERICAN jobs first and only)
Is it...

Raising tariffs to higher levels and keeping them there?

(None of the tariffs that Trump has imposed have been removed. Even those imposed on allies and countries with which he has negotiated new trade deals.)
Trump's trade policy results in NO ONE - not even Americans - being able to play by a set of rules.

Trump's managed trade approach is for HIM to decide how much can be imported and from whom.

That moves US trade relations WITH EVERYONE - not just China - toward state control.
This is what happens when trade becomes all about national security.

Even trade that has NOTHING to do with national security becomes about national security.
