Criticisms of Trump's undemocratic behavior tend to revolve around his violation of norms. While norm-breaking can be undemocratic, it isn't *inherently* undemocratic. Some norms are good; others aren't. Which is why it's important to avoid "norm fetishism"

As I argued in my @TheAtlantic essay, it's unfortunate that we had two years of the purposeful delegitimation of a legitimate democratic outcome

And it seems we'll have two more years of it, based on (mis?)reading Mueller. That's not good for democracy: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
This part of the Mueller Report is being cited endlessly as reflecting badly on Trump. But it actually suggests Trump was right. The fact of the Mueller investigation, even though no one knew what it would turn up, was used to attack Trump's basic legitimacy
Despite #MuellerReport clearly falling (well) short of the maximalist claims of those, like @tribelaw, who eagerly indulged in zany collusion conspiracy theories, are now calling for *more* delegitimization despite being very wrong about said conspiracies:

This part of the Mueller Report seems relevant, for example: "Unlike cases in which a subject engages in obstruction of justice... the evidence we obtained did not establish that the President was involved in an underlying crime related to Russian election interference"
Of course, the Mueller Report establishes Trump's rather unique badness, but as I note in the essay, badness has no bearing on broader questions of legitimacy. In short, badness and legitimacy should be treated separately in how we assess this presidency: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

Re-reading the full context of @IlhanMN's remarks on 9/11 that created so much controversy, I'm still somewhat in awe at how stupid the whole thing is. It's clear what she was saying. Anyone attacking her is acting in bad faith or didn't care to read her actual remarks
As a Muslim who was here during 9/11, the intent of Ilhan's remarks is even clearer. These people—who we as individuals (and not as prisoners of identity politics) have nothing to do with—committed these acts, and then we were asked to endlessly condemn and prove our loyalty
It's actually outrageous, and I guess I've been saving up some of this anger and frustration for the past week. I'm generally inclined to consider the "other side" of a given story. Here, there simply is no other side

Over the last few days, it's become clearer and clearer to me that, without intervention, coverage of the 2020 campaign is likely to be a disaster for everyone except Trump and his core voters, who want to watch it all burn anyway. In this thread I describe the danger I see. 1/
By "disaster for everyone," I mean all candidates opposing Trump, journalists themselves, voters from all sides (except those who have exited from the news system by merging with his hate campaign against the news media) and anyone who seeks the repair of American democracy. 2/
Start with the simple fact of inertia. In ruins after the debacle of 2016, the horse race model and "game" schema that have instructed campaign journalism for at least 40 years are up and running again. It appears the bosses have no better ideas, and no will to develop them. 3/
