Attacks on civil, political & associational rights are now de rigeur for populist authoritarianism. These attacks take the form of systematic constraints on #CivicSpace. @godfreymusila's new rpt for @freedomhouse tracks how these attacks spread in #Africa

Since 2004 in #Africa, according to the rpt by @freedomhouse, many #African countries have attempted, adopted or are in the process of adopting laws or policies improperly constraining the #CivicSpace & political rights

To begin with, at least 12 #African countries, including: Algeria, Burundi, Ethiopia, Egypt, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, & Zambia, have adopted laws adversely constraining NGOs & the #CivicSpace since 2004
Additionally, Egypt, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sudan, & Zambia, among #African countries, have one or more anti-NGO measures, laws or constraints on #CivicSpace pending since 2004.
In Angola, Congo Brazza, Kenya, Malawi, #Nigeria, Zimbabwe, anti-NGO measures have stalled or been defeated by civic organising or judicial decisions or a combination of both.

Despite the failure of anti-NGO & #CivicSpace constraints in many countries, efforts continue to resuscitate such measures under different guises. 2 of such guises are anti-money laundering & counter-terrorism measures, including profiling of NGOs

In Algeria, President Bouteflika has bn in power for 20 yrs
In Sudan, Bashir did 30
In Angola, Dos Santos did 35
In Zimbabwe, Mugabe was in power for 37yrs
Between them they were in power for a total of 122 yrs or an average of 30.5 yrs each.
None of these men lost an election yet all of them are now out, kicked out by the system & ppl that they ruled with an iron fist. They were not the only ones. In Ethiopia, the democratic centralism of the ruling EPRDF coalition also chewed & spat out former PM, Desalegn

I just finished reading the judgment of the Abuja High Court in the trial & conviction of IG Wala for criminal defamation & incitement. The word "perverse" is reserved for these kinds of judgments & proceedings. This is not about Mr. Wala & what anyone may or may not think of him
It's impossible to describe in words how terribly awful the judgment of the Abuja High Court in the case & conviction of #IGWala is. So, let me try & illustrate in a few lines the problems with the judgment & why no one, not evn those who dislike him as a vocation shd crow abt it
There were 4 counts against #IGWala, for criminal intimidation; managing unlawful society; public incitement; & criminal defamation. The prosecution laid no evidence to prove the count of criminal intimation, so the judge threw it out. That left 3 counts.

In Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, proceedings are underway in #ACHPR64, the 64th Ordinary Session of @ACHPR. The conditions are far from conducive. The Egyptian Mukhabarat are stifling advocacy & harassing NGO advocates with a systematic obstacle course of manufactured difficulties
Groups attending #ACHPR64 are finding that visas are difficult to get. Yesterday, after facing serious frustration, @ACHPR negotiated for some groups to travel on the condition that they would get visas on arrival. That experience was worse than an ordeal
Registration has proved difficult. Agents of the Mukhabarat are everywhere, rifling through documents & bags. Their excuse is counter-terrorism presumably. But a few participants are complaining of documents disappearing from their bags & rooms just like that at #ACHPR64

It's looking increasingly like the Missouri legislature will make an end-run on gutting the extremely popular redistricting reform amendment passed by voters last November. #fairmaps 1/
In November, the Missouri amendment won with 62% of the vote, carrying 82 of 116 counties (including a majority of heavily Republican ones).

The handful of counties where it failed were mostly smaller ones.

All different races of Mankind are derived from Manu and Shradha. The current Manu is Vaivasvata Manu.
2/ The word Manu literary means man but it is a title given to the progenitor of mankind. According to Hindu Puranas there are many kalpas (One day of Lord Brahma the creator) and each Kalpa has 14 manvantara and each manvatara has one manu. So basically each Kalpa has 14 Manus.
3/ The current manu of the present manvantara is Shraddhadeva or Vaivasvata Manu of this current Kalpa. He is the son of Vivasvat (Probably Surya) and is therefore also known as Manu-vaivasvata.
