My Chicago Tribune editor very gently nudged me to reconsider the copy I turned in this week that I considered a B- to B, good enough to run, but not my favorite work, and offered me a couple of fresh angles and more time. Now it's something I'm fully proud of.
This is the work of editing as much as anything, reminding the author to be accountable to themselves. The work was fine, perfectly acceptable, but she knew I could do better (having read me for like seven years), so she made the space and time for me to be better.
Immediately thinking about how to do this with student writing.
