My @nytimes op-ed is about how the Saudi-UAE axis of autocracy is ruining Sudan's transition to democracy. Please read, comment, and share: nytimes.com/2019/06/11/opi…

@nytimes The governments of Saudi Arabia and the UAE have since 2011 dedicated their significant financial resources - and their relationship with the West - to stop democracy at any price, in fear it'll reach their own doorstep.
@nytimes Eight years later, here's their record:
- Crushed the Bahraini uprising
- Bankrolled the return to military dictatorship in Egypt
- Mismanaged Yemen's transition, then launched a devastating war
- Meddled ineffectively in Syria
- Armed a rogue general in Libya
- And now, Sudan.
@nytimes The Saudi and UAE regimes are the single greatest threat to democracy, freedom, dignity and stability in the Arab region. Imagine if they employed their resources in 2011 to *aid* the transitions - we'd have multiple thriving Arab democracies by now.
@nytimes This op-ed - my first in the NYT - is dedicated to my brave sisters and brothers in Sudan, and is a message of love for them and solidarity with their struggle. We're not free until we're all free, and we're not safe until we're all safe.
