Three years, no trade and investment policy. We want a US trade deal but as yet no reason why we should want it.

Just not good enough. Negotiations as Government game rather than about the future of the country. Whether Brexit or trade deals, the UK Government machinery has so far in no way got to grips with what is required.
According to the previous UK Government this level of transparency threatens the success of negotiations.

Verdict of new Secretary of State unknown, but I'm not expecting serious engagement any time soon trade.ec.europa.eu/doclib/press/i…

Without even reading the article you can see the problem here. Show the EU Government is serious about no-deal. Which Parliament may scupper.

Incentive for EU to engage - nil.

We really need media to explain accurately what negotiations involve.
On media misunderstanding Brexit negotiations see also this a couple of weeks ago in the Spectator from @bbcnickrobinson - a Chief Negotiator's exact job is to manage their own side, to find out what is acceptable, which is why the UK not having one is such a problem.
@bbcnickrobinson Oops, on the first tweet am told if I'd read beyond the headline this story would say correctly the EU won't respond without knowing Parliament was supporting the PM. Whether they'll respond even then I doubt, but on this occasion mea culpa... (and @JGForsyth is usually good...)

On the other hand:

- Free Ports sound good
- Can pretend EU rules prevented them in the past
- Action without the boring bit of deciding rationale
- Plenty of opportunities for corruption (free ports are a nice gift to a locality)
And if Sam wrote about it then Dmitry must, by trade geek law, have done similarly...
The serious analysis of free ports by @pholmes8 @uk_tpo - they probably don't achieve a lot, you still need to follow WTO disciplines, and most importantly ensure this isn't just about relocation from one place to another blogs.sussex.ac.uk/uktpo/publicat…

Very grateful for the positive reaction to this Irish backstop explainer. There were of course criticisms - Northern Ireland is not contested but fully part of the UK, London has no basis for a claim, why do we need border checks anyway - mostly from anonymous accounts...
A few comments along the lines of "why shouldn't the EU compromise more?" - for which I think it worth pointing out how unique but also fragile is the EU Single Market. Many countries e.g. US, Canada have different rules in the same country, it is hard to create a single market
Ironically of course it was the UK who provided much of the vision to create and deepen the single market, and those involved would understand that such a single market needs protective borders. The Conservative Party in particular rebelled at their own creation...

They heard from the ace @k21fem:

1. A few thoughts on the damaging normalisation of No Deal. To start with there is no mandate for No Deal from the 2016 referendum. The Leave campaign never argued for No Deal. It said it would get a deal.
2. There is no doubt that No Deal would be the most damaging outcome for the economy. Have a look at the most recent @CommonsEUexit evidence sessions here parliament.uk/business/commi…
3. I am genuinely puzzled why those who don’t make things and don’t trade with the EU for a living appear to know better than those who do what effect No Deal would have on these businesses.
