I keep seeing establishment Dems and MSNBC-types exhibit a weird guttural hostility to the idea of "economic populism." But honestly, if the Democratic Party isn't about economic populism, I don't know what the fuck it is.
And I also see references to the Trump movement or even the Tea Party as "economic populism." For the life of me, I cannot figure out why GOP policy should be considered economic populism. Did Trump have the populist sheen of a con man? Sure. But why we do we pretend it's real?
It seems to me that "right-wing populism" is simply anti-immigration, hostility to dominant cultural forces, welfare chauvinism, along with some lip service paid to trade protectionism. Even it's anti-elitist sentiments are largely fraudulent.
It's bizarre to me that a political movement can claim the label of populist while constantly having to dig in its heels to defend the idea that it's fine for three families to hold half the wealth in the nation.
